Mollie #66 - Villa Obispo, Chile - Painting, Postreton Planning, and Humility

                                            February 10

Hey All,

I am currently in Concepcion for return and report, because I am training. I hoping to pick up some earrings and maybe a suitcase here in Concepcion.

It has been a fun week. We painted a house white, cleaned out a junk room, taught a lesson that included discussing wiji boards and hand signals to call bad spirits.  It's a blessing to teach people about using prayers, scriptures, and the priesthood for answers instead.

We walked a lot. We had intercambios. I finally got to know who Hermana Marchant is. She is an ex-companion of a lot of my companions (I'd heard a lot about her!)

We divided the sector with the Elders. I don’t know if I explained it to you, but this ward has four missionaries. So we were all kind of just working in all sides, because it is really hard to split a sector. We lose investigators. So we talked and decided it would be better to split the sector with them. So now we will be looking for new people this week. I think this will really help me, because I won´t get so lost all the time. You can ask my companion.  I am always looking at the map.

We are working to arrange a postreton which is a big pastry competition. We are planning to have it at the church. We will see how it goes.
My companion is finally adjusting to the mission better. She found it really hard when she first got here. She is used to the perfect California Disneyland weather and found all of the walking in these crazy temperatures really stressful.

Spiritual Thought:
I've been teaching about humility, being weak of heart. It is relying on God and his truth more than our own truth.  From General Conference,  Ulisses Soares shared:

Being meek does not mean weakness, but it does mean behaving with goodness and kindness showing strength serenity healthy self-worth and self-control. It is not possible to grow and develop it in the twinkling of an eye but rather through the process of time.

Rather than solve the problem himself, the lord wants us to develop the faith that will help us rely upon Him in solving our problems and trust him.

My scripture of the week is in Proverbs 16:
3 aCommit thy works unto the Lord, and thy bthoughts shall be established.

If you are humble the Lord will help you establish your way. You will reach a potential that is above your own thoughts for yourself.

I've seen this so many times on my mission, with myself and those we teach. Working humbly with the lord and trusting his path brings the potential out in each of us. Sometimes we fight it or question it. Sometimes it's a lot more work than we want to do, but always we grow, and in looking back we see that by humbling ourselves our potential and expectations have grown.

                Love you lots,
                         Hermana Bowman

Mollie #65 - Villa Obispo, Chile - Made Burritos for Zone, Saw Hermana Lattin, Climbed over home fence

                                 February 3

Hey all,

Happy birthday, Mich! You have official been promoted to the age of a quarter.

So what have I been up to?
Well, today we planned and cooked for the zone activity. We made homemade burritos. I made refried beans from scratch, which was a first for me, but they turned out really yummy. Canned beans are really cheap in the US, but here they are 5 dollars a can. So you cook the beans, and then mix in sautéed onion, add salt to taste, and quite a bit of water. Stick it in the blender until it looks right. If it is watery add more beans.

Ward family we love to visit
The activities were fun. We played water games, did a scavenger hunt, and constructed temples from spaghetti noodles and gummy candy.

Other things we have been up to this week include knocking a lot of doors, which is always interesting. We have been looking for new people as a focus of our mission.

We got a new mission leader named Spencer. He just got back from serving a mission in North Chile, Santiago North, I think. He has a lot of great ideas, so we are going to see how it goes. We have a couple of activities lined up already.

My companion is starting to adapt to the mission routine, which is nice. We can walk faster now and talk to more people. This week we have Return and Report for the new people. So we will be taking a bus up to Concepcion.

We also did intercambios this week, which was fun because I got to spend a day with Hermana Lattin. I just love that girl. She just feels like California.
Thank you Bowman y Pop-Pop y Aunt Mary for the shoes and the sticky notes and the makeup - but especially for the shoes. I love them and some of my old ones were getting a bit ratty.

Funny story so the other day the other sister accidentally stole our keys along with their own. We, dressed in our missionary clothes, had to climb and jump a six foot fence to get out and into the house. My companion was in a pencil skirt and didn’t find it nearly as funny as I did. We both got scraped up a little, but it was totally worth it to be in the house. Even if we had to climb through a window after climbing the fence.

One focus I have been working on is gratitude. We know that a prayer with God is like a conversation. And it is or at least it feels like it. We express gratitude and we ask for things and we talk about our day. Gratitude is easy in a prayer but we don´t express gratitude nearly as often when we talk to others. Just a thought.
                    Love you all lots,
                          Hermana Bowman

PS. Check if you have a letter from Hermano Quesada. It was a video for Riley for his birthday.

Mollie #64 - Villa Obispo, Chile - Christmas Box, BBQ, Choose to Swim

                                             January 27
Hey all,

My box finally came. I love it.

Rockin Carla Siaz's Gafas - sunglasses

Thank Sister Webb for the letter and Sister Jolley for everything. I love the pens she sent and the cookies.

Got my box!!! Love it! Love you all!
Thank you so much, Young Womens - The pillowcase rocks!

I am running on only a handful of minutes today. We are working with a  part-member family that despite having trials, are super great people. The mom has a son that is schizophrenic and a daughter that suffers from depression. We are working on reactivating them and teaching them the role of the atonement.

All of the converts are doing great.

We are still looking for people. You know, talking to people and seeing what they think about God and if he’s important to them. We ask if they believe in Christ, and if so why. We discuss who is He and why does he matter to you and your life?  We ask if they’d like to learn more about him.

Dino Attack in Laja
Here are some pictures for the ward barbeque that we had.

BBQ de Barrio

Spiritual Thought: I was talking about it to Hermana Nelson, and I thought I'd share it with you all as well.

We draw strength from our covenants as we keep-on, in this troubling fallen world that is sooo far away from God. When times get difficult, we rely on the promises of God. After all many times everything else falls through. Sometimes it is the only thing that we have to rely on.

This all leads down to that whole fall to your knees or fall to sin philosophy.
What do we do when we have troubles as an individual or as a family?

There are simply two options -
Rely on God or Fall Away.
The path is narrow.

I don´t know when the moment will come, but I think at some point everyone is forced to sink or swim.

So choose to swim.

I like to think about the 13th Article of Faith.

I believe in being honest true chaste benevolent virtuous and in doing good to all men (and women), indeed I may say that I follow the admonition of Paul- I believe all things, I hope all things, I have endured many things. I hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy, I seek after these things.

I invite you all to go seeking.

      Love you all lots!
         Hermana Bowman

PS I loved the box.

Riley # 52, 53, 54 - Lomita, UCLA, Lomita - Baptism and Transfer and Back

                                          January 27th

Hey Everyone,

I'm sorry - no time today. I will send pictures next week. Still alive, doing well, and enjoying the first 21 years of life. Let you know what we are so busy with next week. Thanks for the letters and thank the webs as well for the letters everyone sent.

                              Love,
                                             Elder Bowman

                                                   February 3, 2014
Hi guys,

Sorry I didn't get a good letter last week. We left emailing kind of late and then had a call that took up a half hour of the time we planned to use emailing. Tell Bowman thanks for the card and money. We went out for burgers today with a couple of missionaries.

The Chinese New Year activity went great. There were over 200 people there. The members really helped out and the performances were great. We had a lot of nonmembers we knew there as well as some we hadn't met yet. I wasn't actually able to take a lot of pictures, but some other people did so we will have to see if I can get them and send them to you.
The members were great. We actually had a birthday cake with the person who invited us over for dinner on my birthday. They had the song "Happy Birthday" playing in the background during dinner, being sung over and over again in English and in Chinese. They are a great family and it was wonderful spending my birthday dinner there.

Even more exciting was the baptism this week. She was baptized by her husband. Her husband was just baptized last November. She started learning after his confirmation. It really is amazing to see them both join the church.

They really have a strong testimony. They live about at least an hour away from the the church and have to work 12 hours a day, 6 days of the week. She had to go back to work immediately after the baptism, but they still don't complain. They are looking for a better job, but are happy they can be a part of the branch.

Transfers are tomorrow. I have been moved out of the Branch. It is a little strange packing. I have been in the Branch my whole mission and haven't really moved much. I have never really left an area before. It has been really wonderful serving in the Branch and in Palos Verdes.

I am going to be going to UCLA and the surrounding area. It is a very different place than Palos Verdes and Torrance. It is a little sad to leave the people here even though I won't be too far away. I can't help but wonder what will happen to them and if we will meet again. Still, I know the Elders here will look after them and it will be exciting working in a new area.
Apart from all that, I'm doing great. We are still hard on the look out for investigators, but we seem a little more organized than before. There is still a lot to work on, but things look bright.

                 Love,
                               Elder Bowman

                               February 11

Hey everyone,

It has been a crazy week. Our transfers changed on transfer day, so instead of going to UCLA, I was put in the USC area. I have spent the past week in that area. However, today it was changed again so it turns out I am going to be moving back down to Torrance and be in the Branch, but now with two companionships there. We were just told this as I was typing this email, so I am still a little confused about what is going on. I can't tell you about the area because I am not really sure what it is.

Have to go figure out what's going on.

Mollie #63 - Jan 20 - Conversion Stories - A boy on a bike, A sister who debated God's Existence

                                                    January 20, 2014

Hey everyone,

Sorry daddy. I wanted to write you your own letter, but I ran out of time. I have so many mission friends now.

This week was full of miracles. My 'little daughter' here I'm training in the mission is beautiful. She is a Cali girl with Mexican parents. So naturally she speaks Spanish and English perfectly. She comes from a family of five girls. They are all beautiful. She is patient with me, and we are learning and seeing handfuls of miracles everyday.

Yo y Hermana Gallardo
The other day one conversation that struck me hard was of a little 12 year old boy. He is about Donnie's height, and he lives on a bicycle. His name is Diego. He is a muscly little boy, and he came over to talk to us when we were taking a 5 minute break from walk in 100 degree weather. He asked us for pass along card, how we were doing, if we had a boyfriend, etc. and every little thing under the sun.

He pointed out his brother and cousins who were in a little red car down the street. We asked if he lived with his family, and he said he lived on his bike. He spends his days from 10 in the morning to 10 at night on a bicycle. He says he goes home for lunch with his brother but that both of his parents work and that he rarely sees them. We invited him to sports on Saturday. He said he'd like to go. I hope he goes. He is a good kid.

It made me think of how blessed my life is and the value of my family.
Family is so important.

I loved Riley's email about the couple who were baptized. It reminded me of a similar conversion story of one of the people I taught that got baptized less that a month ago.

There is a sister in my old sector here who is 18. When I met her she was 17 and sure that God did not exist. She would debate with people. She thought they were all who believed in God were disillusioned.

Then we met her.

She was presented a challenge to read the Book of Mormon. She did so, along with many questions and an open mind. Her heart changed. We invited her to pray to God and to ask Him if He exists.

She said she had never felt something so beautiful, and that now she knew that God exists.

She continued growing when I left that sector, and now she was recently baptized!

When I think of her, I remember her stubbornness and no nonsense attitude and spark. She is a lot more peaceful now. She is at peace with herself and is not defensive. She smiles with light in her eyes and lifts and grows the faith of those around her and challenges everyone to read the Book of Mormon.

I don't know when the change happened, but God is and will always be a worker of miracles especially for those who exercise their faith in him.

Start with the faith of a mustard seed.

Thank the Santoses for sending me everything I asked for. They are the best!!!

Yo y Hermana Gallardo

Love you lots.

Riley #51 - Lomita, CA - Preparing for Chinese New Year

                                                                                       January 20, 2014

Hey!

Thanks for the video from Statler. Glad that Elder Burr's mother was able to contact you. Now if I am not able to write you can just ask her what Elder Burr wrote. Just kidding!

Thanks for Mollie's letter and Michele's blog. The pictures were great. I really liked Michele's entry on being a mom.

This week was pretty busy. It rained ash one day. Apparently, there was a fire in the mountains of the mission next to ours so we woke up to a brown sky and an orange sun. Small pieces of ash were floating around us. It was a little concerning at first, but had stopped by noon.

We also took our newly baptized members with us to a lesson for the first time. They were a great help and really want to help others. They mentioned the responsibility they feel now that they are baptized.

She said that she knew what was right before, but after being baptized she feels like she has a greater responsibility to do what's right.

He was really excited to receive the priesthood last Sunday. Because of it, he said he looks at people differently now whether it be at work or anywhere. He feels like it is his responsibility to not only help them, but also to help them receive the gospel.

We are inviting everyone to the Chinese New Year's activity. We did a practice for the Lion dance Friday. It totally killed our legs. You have to pretty much walk around doing squats so we were pretty tired. I was in the back and Elder Burr in the front. The front is a lot harder because you also have to hold the head and perform. All I have to do is follow him around.

Love,

Mollie #62 - Villa Obispo, Chile - A very busy week, Hermana Porter was fun!

                                       January 13th

 Hey Everybody!

So today is cambios (transfers). We had a lot of cambios in our house. Hermana Basad and I are training, which means we will be having two completely new people in the same house. Hermana Franseca is going to Temuco, and Hermana Porter, my companion, is going up north to Los Huertos, which is where I was, except she's going to the richer side of the sector.

My fun companion, Hermana Porter
We are all excited - packing, organizing, and doing all sorts of things.

I am so excited to train. We will see how that goes. I know that every new missionary is different, and every trainer is different. I know that it's going to be fun. The most important part is to teach her to follow the rules of the mission, so everything goes well her entire mission.

We did a lot of service this week. We've been cleaning a lot. I cleaned this house in de Salta de Laja.

See that window behind me? That is what I spent the whole time doing -  washing these windows for these little cabins that they rent out. What was maddening is that they never looked clean even after I washed them. Oh well.

It's more like apartment buildings for one of the hermanas in the ward next to our ward.  She hadn't used them for three years. They are really cute. They reminded something out of an eighties movie. I can't remember the movie, but they are like little cabins. They have nothing more than a bed and a tiny staircase that is so narrow that if you're fat, you couldn't go up them.

Yep, this staircase is about as wide as my skinny companion. Big people could not vacation here!
This type of a fly is called a calliwacho. They bite and not small bites. There was lots of screaming and running away anytime they got close.

Hermana Porter and I have been doing lots of things. I'm really going to miss her. She taught me so much - much more than she knows. We laugh all of the time. She is so much fun.
We helped clean Lilian's house too.
Her birthday is coming up tomorrow, and since we have cambios, we've been preparing for it all week for her family. They have a tradition of celebrating the whole birthday month in her family, but we've been doing birth week.

Hermana Porter's Pre-Birthday Celebration
Anyway, we've been taking photos of her everywhere with the letter A for Alison Porter, so she can send them home to her family. It's been fun.

We hiked to La Salta de Laja Falls

We've seen so many miracles this week. I know we have them every week, but seeing people change and become happy - and  knowing that something doesn't seem to be working then does - is what makes being a missionary so amazing and even fun.

One family needed us, and the miracle is that we found them right when they needed us - in the exact moment.

Twinsies
One funny story that happened this week- Hermana Porter has this habit of stashing food, like under her shoes or in a pantleg or anywhere. She's tiny - a tiny, little girl - who can't eat that much. We are always given way too much food.

One day we were eating at the table of one of the hermanas, and the hermana said, "Oh, please, just stay here longer." We were sitting at the table, and she went to prepare even more food.

Hermana Porter asked me, "Can I have your napkin?" So she stashed this giant pile of noodles in our two napkins. The hermana comes to us and says, "Wah? I must have forgotten to put napkins on the table!" and then left to get more napkins.

My shoulders were shaking, because I couldn't help but laugh about it. Hermana Porter tells me, "I can't help it, I can only eat so much, and then I get hungry in thirty minutes." It was so funny.

I have so little time left on my mission. I am making more plans and trying to accomplish everything that I had planned for my mission. I guess it's crunch time, you could say.
Picking Raspberries

La familia Gonzalez - Love them

Evidence that it's summer! (Hermana Porter doesn't really tan.)
I'm looking forward to this cambios, and I'm really hoping it will be just as much fun as with Hermana Porter. I'm hoping also that I can find something new I can bring and do to this ward and to this sector, so that we can keep progressing.

Jake - your story about the mountain lion - CRAZY! CRAZY! - What were you thinking, dude??? That type of experience - DONE. You know, it doesn't have to be a life or death experience to write to me. I know that's totally within your abilities. I like hearing things like you building gym equipment with PVC pipes. That sounds like fun. I never tried to do that before. Tell me about everything that's going on in your life. How everyone is doing. Tell me about Mission Prep - what are you doing to prepare for your mission? I don't really have any advice for you. Stay worthy. Stay good. Do good things. Be happy. Those are all good things. I also want to hear about your work. Tell me exactly what you're doing with it.

Spiritual Thought: Don't give up! We've been teaching people this week who were not praying, so they weren't understanding. We were so confused as to why they weren't really trying. We said prayers and fasted. People that were shut off with their hearts closed not listening, they totally changed their perspectives. We had to have patience. We had to wait for God to touch their hearts and have them listen to the Spirit. We prayed and received answers.

Pablo, one of our investigators, is seventeen. We gave him to the elders and was baptized this week. He has a lot going on in his life, partially with his family. I hope that the church and the gospel can really help him out. He's really great.

Love,

                    Hermana Bowman

PS I still didn't get my Christmas box. Boooo

Riley #50 - Lomita, CA - Planning for Chinese New Year

                                                     January 13, 2014
Hey Everyone,

Sorry, I don't have much time today. It seems to always go this way. We had time planned for writing today, but got caught up cleaning our apartment. Thanks for all of the emails. I will try to respond more next week.

I'm looking forward to the next couple of weeks. The branch has a huge activity planned for Chinese New Year's on the 25th. There should be tons of people there.

It sounds as though Elder Burr and I am going to be doing the lion dance. A member apparently bought a bunch of stuff for the activity when they were in Hong Kong, so it should be spectacular.  I'm so grateful for the support we have here and at home.

Now that winter break is over, we are becoming really busy again trying to meet with our investigators. One sister is rapidly preparing for baptism.   Her husband is a recent convert who got baptized back in November.

Wow. It's exciting to hear about Statler and Sara and their missionary experiences. I don't have time to watch Statler's video today, but will next week.

Thank Sister Slade for thinking of us. I'm in contact with the downtown missionaries, so if she can describe more where to go, that would be good. I think they had a hard time with the address.

 Love,
               Elder Bowman

Mollie #61 - Villa Obispo, Chile - Shots for Hermana Porter, Celebrating New Year's

                                                      January 6
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for keeping up writing letters to me, and thanks for sending Riley's letters to me. I loved them a lot. He's not the best letter writer, but he's not the worst, so that's all right. I hope he's doing well. I know he probably needs ideas and things like, and I definitely have some, but I'd need to talk to him. We definitely have to arrange things so we can Skype on Mother's Day.

I hope you guys received my Christmas gifts and liked them.

This week we were sick all week. I saw all sorts of doctors and medical people. Monday I was sick with what some think was strep, but it only lasted a day and a half. I slept that long, you know how I can sleep. After sleeping, I had a fever and my throat was sore for two days, and then I was fine.

Hermana Porter was throwing up for days, so I had to figure out something else to do to help. I tried lots of things, but the Relief Society - they win! - brought her tacos, just of corn and bread, so she wouldn't be too sick.

Hermana Porter on the right.
The next day, I went with Hermana Porter to the hospital. She had been throwing up for two days straight - 8 in the morning to 8 at night. We were waiting at the hospital, and she was given shots. These weren't  small shots. These were really big shots. It was the second time I was at the hospital, because I went with Hermana Francesca earlier in the week.

Anyway, they gave her these shots, and she was bleeding, and they didn't give here anything to put on it. She got blood all over her clothing. She was mad that they left her there bleeding on her clothes. It was a reminder that we are not in the US.

Then we had New Year's. For New Year's, we went to a member's house - husband, wife, and three kids. They are new members of the ward. They are wonderful people, beautiful people. They are only twenty-two , and they have three kids. They made big changes in their lives. The gospel changed everything for them. It made their life.

We went over to their house for New Year's and had a great time. We had three or four different types of meat, mashed potatoes, corn. It was good - good Chilean food. After that we came home at 10:30.

My Sector - I figured out where north is!

There's a tradition here that you hug everyone at midnight for New Year's. We can't have that happening with elders and hermanas or hugging with people in the ward.

So we came home at 10:30 and had a little dance in our house. Hermana Francesca, who is in the house with us, is a dance teacher.  She was teaching us different types of dances. It was fun! We danced until midnight when we had the countdown. Then we went to bed afterward. Actually, I went to bed afterward. I'm not sure what everybody else was doing.

Saturday we went contacting new people, and looking for a house for a family to rent. A family we are friends with are renting. The family they are renting from are coming back, and they have 15 days, so we helped look some.

Everyone is doing really well. The ward is doing really well. It's really independent here. It's totally different from the other places, because it's kind of like Utah. It's so advanced.  They have all of the technology. They are educated. They speak two languages.

I've been enjoying it, because there's a lot I can do. The people are more independent. They are married in homes, not divorced - or never were married, but lived together for so many years  having all sorts of problems. Nothing like that here. It's just nice - a nice place that's beautiful.

This is John, wearing my new hat

I'm trying to figure out how to serve them. Members will come with us to the lessons to teach, and I'm loving that. We also are working well with the Elders. I'm just really having a good time here.

I love the ward and my companion, Hermana Porter. Hermana Porter and I are great friends.  She is fantastic. She helps me be a better person, which is fantastic. I'm always laughing with Hermana Porter. We are always laughing about something.

            I love you lots!

Riley #49 - Lomita, CA - Two Baptisms Bring Happiness and Support

                                     January 6, 2014

Hi Everyone,

First, thank the Santoses for me for their gift, as well for the Christmas card they sent me. That was really great.

This was a really great week for us.  We had two baptisms yesterday. It was really excellent and amazing to see how they have grown. They truly understand what it means to be baptized and the covenant associated with it, and because of that it was really a joyous occasion.

Most of the Branch made it to the baptism, which is good seeing all the support everyone gives. Everyone was happy and they all were really excited.

They were, of course, the most excited. It was great to hear their testimonies.

It's such a huge change for them. When he started meeting with us, he didn't have a belief in God, but now he understands that there is not just God, but a plan and purpose to his life. He knows the scriptures are true. All of these things he's learned and knows from the spirit makes him happy. He wants to be part of the church forever.

She has changed a lot, too. She gave up working on Sunday and tea, as she came to know Christ. She is really happy now, too.

That is the news of the week. Can't get better than that. It is weird to hear about our missionaries coming back.  Three days till my year mark!

Love,

               Elder Bowman

Mollie #60 - Villa Obispo, Chile - Depression, MS, and Hope

                                December 30, 2013
Hey All,
So we had to deal with all sorts of problems this week. Mainly in that I have been sick. I think it might be from too much sun. Fever, coughing, sore throat, blocked up nose, body has absolutely 0 energy.

We had a sister get baptized this week, which was really beautiful.

Her 12 year old son is a fantastic ball of energy that rides his bike with his friends around town and says “Hi Hermanas!” as he flashes us a smile. He loves music, soccer, biking, and chocolate syrup. His mother, being ill, weighs on him. You see it when he is with her. He takes care of her. He sits beside her. He holds her hands. He gets her a glass of homemade juice. He runs to the store. He does his homework early. He tracks her when she moves afraid that she might fall. He loves her. She leans on him.

His mother was trapped in depression - trapped in her bed. She had some really heavy sins. Not the small kind at all. She had been in bed due to severe depression for months.

Then the world really tossed her a hard ball. When she was just starting to pray regularly and gain a little hope, she got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She was really down. She did not have energy to leave that house.  But prayer and hope had the power to change her life. She did a 180, and threw off the chains that bound her. It sounds easy and quick, but know that it was not an easy process.

The second time we visited her she told us about how she woke up that morning and really wanted to wash the windows. It didn´t matter that her little frail body couldn't lift the bucket of water. She fell twice while washing those windows, but she felt free. She had hope.

Her whole face and world changed. She prayed and prayed and prayed even more. She read the scriptures and then prayed more. She cried and cried more. Every time we visited her, she had visibly changed. It was beautiful. She started smiling, and she started laughing. She learned to feel peace, to feel joy. Then she asked us when she could be baptized. She had learned to love repentance and wanted more.

This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The process never ends we have hope, we change, we make covenants, and we thrive in the peace and joy that is the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

Elder Holland has said this about it:  "When disappointment and discouragement strike - and they will - you remember and never forget that if our eyes could be opened, we would see horses and chariots of fire as far as the eye can see, riding at reckless speed to come to our protection. They will always be there, these armies of heaven, in defense of Abraham's seed."
